Daring to Make a Difference Thru Dance!

While working in the dance and fitness industry I’ve been fortunate enough to receive many exciting teaching opportunities that have taken me all around the world.  Some of my students have been dance and fitness pros, others who danced previously and just getting back into it and then there’s the kids who want a career in dance.  Every time I step on a stage to teach it’s a mind blowing experience, and I had one earlier this month that I need to share with you.

LA Traffic

Los Angeles to Palm Springs in normal traffic is about two-and-a-half hours, but on May 3 it took me 5 hours to get to the Esmeralda Hotel in Indian Wells, a resort area just outside Palm Springs.  Frustrated as I was by the drive, I was immediately jazzed once I saw the sign for the first ever Dare to Dance Convention.

Christy Lane and Me

Christy Lane is the creator of the convention and, for those who know her or of her, she needs no introduction.  We met at the IDEA World Fitness Convention last summer when, after participating in one of my classes, said “I’m having my first ever dance convention next year and I must have you!”  Her energy was so contagious so of course I gave her my business card and, after months of prepping and chatting about her convention, I was ready!

Dare to Dance Convention

This convention was quite different than most; most conventions I’ve participated in are strictly for professionals, instructors or to teach kids how to dance but the Dare to Dance convention was for everyone and anyone! Going in I thought I might have a 60 year old dancing next to a 12 year old and guess what???  That’s exactly what happened!  I presented 4 different classes and each of them had kids, teenagers, adults and senior citizens.  There’s really something to be said when a room full of people with different talent levels come together as one; it was simply mind-blowing and I wish that you were all flies on the wall to see it in action.

Something else really touched me and brought back memories from my childhood dancing days.  As a young dancer I was trained to always introduce myself to the teacher and thank them for a good class.  This happened at every class I taught at the convention and it took me back to my youth.  These kids were so respectful and appreciative of me and my work; I just can’t begin to tell you how good it felt! I had 3 different 13 year olds approach me after this class with tears of happiness that I opened their eyes to a new style of dance and they experienced a feeling while they were dancing that they had never felt before.  WOW…that completed me for the ultimate mind blowing experience.  That I was able to touch teens gave me chills and kept me on Cloud 9 my whole two-and-a-half hours back to LA.

In my regular daily classes I get to transform young adults to senior citizens through dance and fitness but it’s been awhile since I’ve worked with kids, and this experience reminded me how much I miss it.  I want it back and it will happen.  :)  Dance is the ultimate life changer for ALL!  Plus, it is cheaper than therapy.  :)  And WE get to do it every day together.  Thanks to all of you for giving me your gifts.

Dance Getaway with Ilyse

Dance Getaway with Ilyse

From time to time, my students ask me, “Ilyse, have you ever thought about putting together a dance retreat where we can dance with you all day long?  Or, maybe even a dance cruise?”

Both of these ideas sound incredible and my students definitely have great ideas.  I mean what more could you ask for, but a weekend out of town with dance?!  Seems ideal to me, however it is not always that easy.

Dance retreats and cruises have been written in my business plan for years and at some point will happen for sure.  In the meantime, I have asked myself over and over again, “How can I plan and include my students in my dance travels?”  It has come to me…FINALLY!

Last August, I had the honor and privilege to meet one of “America’s most popular and respected dance instructors” Christy Lane.  Christy saw me present at IDEA World Fitness Convention which is the World’s Largest, Longest-Running International Fitness Convention.  She has 77 award winning videos/DVDs, CDs, CD-Roms, books and numerous magazine articles to her credit, her work has been recognized by U.S. News and World Report, Washington Post, American Fitness, USA Today and Shape Magazine as she continues to share the message of wellness through dance.  Christy approached me right after my session and said, “Ilyse, hi I am Christy Lane.  I am starting the Dare to Dance Convention and I must have you a part of it.”

Sooo….to make a long story short (too late) :) Christy and I got connected to plan my position with her new Convention.  It is very exciting and flattering to be a part of a brand new Convention alongside a team of instructors that are incredible.  Here are some to brag about:  America’s Best Dance Crew, Chris Thomas, Jabbawockeez, Eddie G, and the list goes on.

During The Dare to Dance Convention, I will be teaching four different dance classes from Jazz to Broadway to Lyrical and showcasing my new Dancinerate Burn With The Beat DVDS.  I invite YOU to join me in this Dance Getaway!  The Convention takes place in Palm Springs on May 3-5.  If you sign up now, you will save up to 30% off.  This Dance Convention is for all levels so do not be shy, come DANCE and show all your best moves!
