It happened to me this past Thursday when I was flying home to LA from my week in Arizona. I had an amazing week in Phoenix and was wiped out so I popped my headphones in my ears. I fell asleep for the first 45 minutes of the flight. I must have been grooving in my sleep because when I woke up the guy across from me said, “How can you fall asleep on such a short flight and dance at the same time? Are you a gymnast?” I cracked up as I knew exactly where this conversation was headed…I would soon be drilled on my fitness routine. Normally, I never mind talking about my passion for dance and fitness, but I just had this hunch that I knew where this guy was going with the conversation. So, I began telling him briefly about my job as a Dance and Fitness Expert, Instructor, Choreographer, etc. Then, that is when it happened…he said the words I knew he would say, “I never have time to workout. I have gained 65 lbs. in the last year and a half. My work gets in the way. I really need to get back in shape, blah blah.”
I was completely honest with him when I said, “Sir, what you are saying are just plain old excuses. Everyone is busy and yes, life does get in the way. We have to remember that working out should not be a chore, it should be an added enjoyment to our lives that we make time for. We should choose a workout that makes us happy and excited about life. It needs to be your way to release stress and connect with yourself. Working out is so accessible and convenient now a days. There are many classes at local studios and gyms; online workouts; personal trainers; cable fitness show; DVDs to purchase, etc. No matter how busy you are, you can find the time to workout. You have to make the commitment and stick to it. Consider it a new journey and chapter in your life. Once you start you will never look back and I promise you WILL thank me later.”
Well, I am pretty sure the guy was motivated and inspired by my feedback and advice as he had a huge smile on his face and the guy next to him joined our conversation giving him motivation too. I LOVE my job! I continued to share more of my workout tips and suggestions hoping he would jump off the plane to exercise right away.
I also informed him about FitnessGlo which an online source for exercise. Even though this gentleman lives in San Jose, CA, he can still workout with me online.
